The Clock Is Ticking: Defund Day 2026 and the Fight to Continue Defunding Planned Parenthood

In just days, one of the most important pro-life policy victories in recent history will expire unless Congress acts. This Saturday, June 27, pro-lifers across the country will gather for Defund Day 2026, a coordinated series of rallies organized by Live Action and other pro-life organizations, demanding that Congress permanently end taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood and other abortion businesses.

As AMU/APU Students for Life, we believe every student has a voice in this fight, even online, even from a distance. Here is what is happening, why it matters, and what you can do right now.

What Is Defund Day 2026?

On July 4, 2025, President Trump signed the “Big Beautiful Bill”, formally known as H.R. 1, the Working Families Tax Cuts, into law. Included in that legislation was a historic provision stripping federal Medicaid funding from abortion businesses, including Planned Parenthood, for one year.

That defunding expires on July 5, 2026. Unless Congress votes to extend it, taxpayer dollars will once again flow directly to Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, beginning this summer.

Defund Day is the pro-life movement’s answer: a unified, public call to action telling Congress that a one-year pause is not enough. Live Action, along with dozens of pro-life leaders and organizations, is rallying Americans at Planned Parenthood locations nationwide on June 27 to send a clear message- MAKE THE DEFUND PERMANENT!

The Numbers Don’t Lie: What Planned Parenthood’s Own Report Reveals

If there were any doubt about why defunding matters, Planned Parenthood’s own 2024-2025 annual report removes it.

According to the report, Planned Parenthood performed a record 434,450 abortions in 2023-2024, an 8% increase over the prior year, or roughly 32,000 more unborn children killed. This figure does not even include telehealth chemical abortions, which are a growing and largely untracked portion of their operations.

Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood’s actual healthcare services continued to shrink. Over the past decade:

  • Cancer screenings fell by more than 42%
  • Prenatal services declined by more than 55%
  • The total number of clients served has declined even as revenue grew
  • Abortions performed increased by over 34%

Dr. Christina Francis, president of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, put it plainly in response to the report: an organization that treats abortion as its primary health service cannot be taken seriously as a healthcare provider.

Despite all of this, taxpayer funding to Planned Parenthood reached more than $830 million in 2023-2024 — nearly $2.3 million every single day — a 50% increase from 2014.

Noah Brandt, a spokesman for Live Action, said these numbers show exactly why a one-year pause in federal funding is not enough, and why Congress must act to make the defunding permanent.

The Legislative Fight: What Pro-Life Organizations Are Demanding

The push to extend and make permanent the defunding of Planned Parenthood is being led by a broad coalition of pro-life organizations. Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America (SBA) has sent a formal letter to Senate Republicans calling for a new budget reconciliation bill that would permanently strip abortion businesses of federal Medicaid dollars.

SBA’s communications director told The Center Square that reconciliation is the only viable legislative path available and urged Republican lawmakers to do everything within their power to renew and strengthen the defunding measure. A Cygnal survey found that 75% of Republican primary voters support defunding Planned Parenthood, giving lawmakers clear public backing to act.

Live Action founder Lila Rose is among nearly 40 pro-life and conservative leaders who signed a coalition letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune urging the Senate to pursue a ten-year prohibition on federal abortion funding through a 2026 reconciliation package. The letter warns that without action, Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood will be fully restored on July 5, 2026.

The impact of defunding is already visible: since the start of 2025, approximately 54 Planned Parenthood facilities have closed their doors as taxpayer funding dried up. Defunding works. The question is whether Congress will make it last.

On Saturday, June 27, 2026, pro-lifers will gather at nine Planned Parenthood locations across the country. Live Action founder and president Lila Rose will speak at the primary demonstration in Orange County, California. Rallies are free and open to the public.

The Defund Is Working — Don’t Let Congress Undo It

The one-year defunding of Planned Parenthood proved something important: when taxpayer money stops flowing to the abortion industry, abortion businesses close. Fifty-four facilities have already shut down. Women in those communities are now being directed to genuine community health centers and pregnancy resource centers that offer real care.

But the clock is ticking. July 5 is not far away. Defund Day 2026 is the movement’s call to Congress: do not restore this funding. Pass a new reconciliation bill. Make the defund permanent.

We are AMU/APU Students for Life. We believe every preborn life matters, every woman deserves better than abortion, and not a single taxpayer dollar should fund the taking of innocent life. Stand with us.

Save Babies. Empower Women. Abolish Abortion.
